Mark,
I don't know any details about the shaft "side play" limits.
However, if the battery won't fully charge (assuming it used to) I
recommend a new battery first! I've heard MANY tales of misfires which
ultimately turned out to be the battery!!!!

I previously (many years) used a "Checker" battery (I got a good one . . .
apparently quality control was iffy). The Panasonic seems to have all the
"good stuff" the Checker had. It also isn't sensitive to charge rate like
the older sealed lead acid types.
I reamed out the terminal holes to accept a bigger AN bolt/nylock instead
of relying on the small holes/bolts. More strength and vibration resistance.
