First, 
I left Tonys answer at the end. He knew what I thought.
Why I asked this is, my tranny was rebuild 2 years ago. Rebuild is a
wrong term, my son in law put it together from 2 items, from a baby Cuda
and a Super Minx. But that problem started right after rebuild, and so I
asked if he had tried to draw shifter axles with a spring balance, as
descripted in Workshop manual. He had not done this, so it seems to me
that the problem may lie in those tiny coil springs locating shifter
axles in their position with small steel balls.
For me this is not so important, in case I manage to rebuild and
exchange whole engine - tranny is easy to take with it. But if someone
has a problem like this, it would be a delight to cure it without
drawing that drive train out.

changing the engine. You can pull the engine and tranny together as one
unit 
but I think you will still have to remove the metal cover you mentioned
so 
to access the shifter lever and remove it prior to removing the
tranmission.
