The less painful way is to do as follows:
1. Lock one hub on the axle.
2. Mark the top of the input drive flange and the free hub with tape or
paint.
3. Rotate the input flange a number of times (20 or more to ensure an
accurate reading.), and have someone else count the rotations on the hub.
4. I think you then need to factor in the fact that one hub is locked, so
divide the total by 2. You should then get the ratio.
