The issue is not with the carbs, but rather the intake.
There are some intakes that will not foul the steering box.
The most reasonable is one available in Australia, and is a copy of the
gooseneck warnford design.
I myself own two of the TWM intakes that narrowly avoid the steering box, and
while no matter which intake you go
with you will still have one fitment problem or another, the performance payoff
is worth it, but going with R&P
is not worth giving up your handling for the sidedraught carbs.

The idea was suggested after a recent acquisition of sidedraft Dellorto
carbs. One fact was omitted that they work well with RHD. In LHD Alpines,
the steering box is in the way which puts a damper on things...
