2. I think the replacement of the door panels in coincidental. The winder 
mechanisms can dry out over time, and I'd suggest removing the panels, and 
giving 
the whole mechanism plenty of grease. I use vaseline, as it is easier to 
remove if it leaks onto the window glass.
Also check the wear on the pinion, as these are very prone to wearing out 
over time.
WD40 will only give temporary respite. 

3. Exhaust smell. It could be that, when you lower the window, you create a 
vacuum effect at certain speeds, which would suck in any exhaust leaks from the 
down-pipes. Check all grommets are intact and tight in the bulkhead, and the 
boot (trunk). If it is fuel stink, rather than exhaust, then it would most 
typically be a break in (or absence of) the high-level breather hose between 
the 
tanks, rather than the low-level cross-over. The cross-over allows fuel 
balance between tanks, and is prone to splitting, or may have been left 
unconnected 
after work.
