1) I have built numerous ones myself and I dont see how this one got
screwed-up. As long as you follow the manual it is a pretty straight forward
process I would have done this one but I was traveling 100% in my job and did
not have the time to outsource and oversee the machine work, etc., etc.. I also
hoped to take advantage of his race experience. Its water under the bridge now.
2) Jarrid also mentioned this. I have the 11 tooth cam and the 11 tooth
oil pump gear. I have not pulled the pan to remove the oil pump yet so I cannot
tell you which oil pump I have. It may be a 1600 pump mated to an 11 tooth gear
but more likely the newer oil pump. The builder welded tabs on the end of the
shaft so that it would be tall enough. I wonder if the assembly could have been
warped during the weld? If it is the new one, cant I just remove the gear from
a 1600 and install it on the 1725 pump? I think this was featured in one of the
club publications recently.
3) Yea, I am apprehensive about putting everything back together without
knowing why it failed.
4) On the front of the block, there is an opening where the oil tube
squirts the oil back into the engine. The builder closed this off with a plate
but left a small hole for the insertion of the tube. I dont know how the oil
enters the timing gear area so did not know if this was a factor.

Chris,
1) I have to make one comment here; If the rebuilder is not a specialist
in Alpine engines, he probably doesn't know how to rebuild an Alpine
engine properly, and I guess just stay away from them. I tell everyone
that these engines are simple in design, but they can very difficult to
rebuild properly.
2) The 11 tooth drive gear on the camshaft, is from a 1725 5-main
engine. You have the 1600 3-main engine block w/late series V head. Was
the intent of the rebuilder to install & run the 1725 oil pump in your
1600? It is slightly larger capacity and new 1600 pumps are not
available. However, one can buy a rotor replacement kit from the UK. If
he did that, you can't run the tach drive because the 11 tooth oil pump
gear is too short.
3) What did he do wrong? It's hard to say without seeing it up close.
4) Where is this hole that he welded in? Try to explain exactly were it
is.
