Does the headlight ground also cause trouble?  If so maybe I'd better
take Larry's advice and go for a more secure grounding rather than
splice into the headlight ground.

Frank one way is to drill a hole through the turn signal housing, put a
screw in with serrated washers on both sides, a nut, and cover the
outside with silicone.  Then run this to a good ground, including the
headlights, so this problems never comes  up again.  I used a screw nut
welded to body around the horn as a good ground.
