Replace the switch, carefully mark the wires before you remove the old one.
It is unlikely you have "burned out" the starter solenoid. It would have to
be operated for a long time for you to do this and you would notice if it
was pulled in.
I have seen some really nice restorations reduced to immobility by an
original starter switch.
It gets used every time you use the car so wearing out is to be expected.
If you get a NOS switch a locksmith can change the barrel to use keys
matching your doors for a minimal fee.
Lucas electrics are very simple, so sorting these problems is not difficult
with a little logical thought.
Your intermittent ampmeter would have also caused flat battery problems
It is when modifications are made to the wiring that strange problems occur.
Have seen a chap put a stereo in his car, found a convenient live wire under
the dash and away he went. The sound was distorted on high volume and it
stopped completely when the wipers were turned on. I fixed the problem by
wiring it to the accessory fuse no problem :-)
