Ed,
Over the years, my Alpines have been the most fun and predictable cars
to drive in rain or snow of any cars I have owned: perhaps that has to do
with the seat-time earned in owning 16 Rootesmobiles. There is nothing more
fun than generating controlled oversteer in an Alpine and wet (or otherwise
slippery) surfaces make it possible.
I must add that a stiffened suspension in an absolute necessity: the
boulevard-ride suspensions Rootes gave us do not help at all. On the other
hand, my Tiger (also with an open differential) was a dog in the rain on the
street: however, it was incredibly competitive in the rain when Vintage
racing.
