Hommmm, most racers and drag racers I know actually go for richer
mixtures-supposedly does not hurt performance, only gas mileage and insures
that the mixture never goes lean, which indeed decreases power.

By their design, Stromburgs work best at around 2.5 pounds fuel
pressure. Forcing more fuel into the float bowls has absolutely no effect on
horsepower, as the carburetors are meant to deliver approximately a 14:1
air/fuel ratio to your engine, and a richer or leaner mixture means less
power. The original mechanical pump uses negligible power...probably not
enough loss to be seen on an engine dynamometer and certainly not enough to
be seen on a chassis dynamometer.
