A light "tapping" counter clockwise with a screwdriver and hammer will free the 
retaining ring holding the sending unit in place.  Of course, a new gasket is 
in order after you are ready to assemble.
Cleaning the inside of the sending unit will insure quality transmission to 
your guage.
