Engine/Tranny compatibilty

Hello All,

I think I may know the answer but I need to be certain.

1) Is a Syncro Tranny compatible with a 1600 engine?

2) Also, has anyone modified a 1600 engine to improve horsepower? If so, 
could you tell me what was done to it?
