Hi,
I am finally getting around to dismantling a gearbox with an O/D
attached that I bought inexpensively about 3 years ago as it is a Rootes
unit with Laycock de Normanville O/D and thought it would fit the Sunbeam
Talbots. It had obviously been used for something other than a car as it
has a 2" diameter pipe welded over the splined input shaft for whatever
reason. Also the O/D unit has a chunk broken out of the aluminum casting
which housed the drain plug and filter. It is in rough shape.
My question is, when did Rootes add an oil seal to the input shaft
of the transmissions rather than the poor reverse spiral (which my Talbots
have)? I'm trying to get a feel from what Rootes product this came from and
year. The important part of this unit is the adaptor plate from the O/D to
the gearbox so I could possibly fit a working O/D to the original Sunbeam
Talbot gearbox.
Thanks,
Bob
