Listers,
Thanks for all the prompt responses - to answer some of the questions asked:
1) I didn't do anything to the carbs while they were off the car - left them
on the manifold, sitting on the bench - didn't even give them a clean!
2) I have the original mechanical fuel pump fitted.
3) I use the car nearly every day, about 400 miles per week.
4) Last time I set the float levels (quite some time ago) I did not find it
difficult - probably because I have a fairly unique inlet manifold (it came
with the car when I bought it 24 years ago). It is a Hillman Hunter GT
manifold with the water passage cut off - the carbs sit absolutely
horizontally. It looks and works better than the description might suggest
and uses a cable instead of linkages.
5) I have a downdraught weber and manifold that I was going to fit at one
stage, until I found that it wouldn't fit after I had a replacement exhaust
manifold (header type) made up - even though they had the original to copy.
6) The flakes of paint/gunge from the petrol tank screwing up the works is a
suggestion that I will investigate on the weekend - I did take the tank out
to do some other work at the same time as I was doing the head gasket -
might be time to add a fuel filter.
Thanks again.
Rick Harrison
