This past weekend, Jan and I spent some time working on Rob Wilson's Commodore
Blue SV Alpine. It all started out on Friday about 5:00 when we received a call
from Rob and his father Sandy. Their water pump had seized up on their way to
Dayton from Chicago and they were stuck in Columbus City, Indiana... neat Ft.
Wayne. So, Jan and I hooked up the trailer and set off on the 3 hour journey to
rescue them. We didn't get home until 4:00 in the morning, and we didn't have
any new water pumps on the shelf!
Early Saturday morning I went over to Tiger Auto to see if Doug had a water
pump in stock. Doug said he that he had just sold his last one the week before,
but I talked him in to digging around at the old shop to see if we could come
up with something. Well, Sandy and Rob's Friday the 13th bad luck was over
because Doug did find a new water pump on a shelf at the old building.
Back at Jan's shop, the four of us spent the entire Saturday working on little
detail things that needed fixed, including the electrical tach problem I had
written to the list about last month. I assume that since no one responded to
my question, that no one knew how to solve the problem. Here's what I found.
In my rush to get trhe car finished before the Invasion, I had missed
installing the ground wire loom that connects the gages to ground. After
installing this, not only did the gauge lights work, but the tach was fixed
too. Obviously, it needed that ground to work properly.
Once Rob's car was all fixed up, we all enjoyed driving our Sunbeams around
town and found a good place to go eat dinner. Rob and his father Sandy then set
off for Washington DC in where Rob lives. If there is anyone in the DC area,
please contact me. Rob would like to know if there are any Sunbeam people in
the area and would like to find a good repair shop for service.
Keep 'em on the road! - Ian
