The Lucas starter uses an inordinate amount of current (amps) for the amount
of torque produced. About 30 years ago I saw figures on the M35 and it had
the WORST torque per amp of any on the market. This would indicate a heavy
heat build up and various other problems.
Not that it can't crank a small 4 cylinder engine, just you have to be
careful.

The starters are fairly reliable, but are not very powerfull.
When we up the compression ratio, or when the engine is hot, and
gassy the gear reduced starter is the answer to our prayers.
