"Valve closed" as a spec, just doesnt cut it.

The valve is closed more than half of the time, but
chosing the cam position where the valve is adjusted
is very important.

Why?

Cams have a ramp on them to quiet the valve clatter
and to insure that the valve closes for cooling.

In absence of written specs, most mechanics can
succesfully adjust the valves by knowing 2 things.
1) Firing order
2) Which valves are intakes, and which are exhausts.

Oddly enough, firing order is the same as valve
opening order for the respective type valve (int/exh).

Also, when one valve has its intake valve fully opened,
the compliment cylinder has its intake valve at the back
side of the base circle on the cam. This point is as
far closed as you'll ever get.

So, knowing the alpine firing order (1342)
and also knowing that 1 and 4 are compliments, as are
3 and 2, adjusting #4 intake when #1 intake is fully opened
is the right thing to do so on and so forth.

#1 intake is full open, adjust #4 intake
#2 intake is full open, adjust #3 intake
#3 intake is full open, adjust #2 intake
#4 intake is full open, adjust #1 intake
#1 exhaust is full open, adjust #4 exhaust
#2 exhaust is full open, adjust #3 exhaust
#3 exhaust is full open, adjust #2 exhaust
#4 exhaust is full open, adjust #1 exhaust

This make sense?

Whoops. Someone rightly pointed out that one adjusts a valve when it is
fully CLOSED.

Same question still applies though. Why doesn't the Alpine just adjust
Valve X when Valve X is fully closed?

Why do they look to another valve to be fully OPEN rather than the valve in
question to be fully CLOSED?

Same question applies for the Holbay H120 cam too.
