Tim,
Yes the correct way is to flash the hot(in this case the negative terminal of
the battery) to the field. The closest battery negative source would be the
starter solinoid. You can flash it at the regulator field terminal also if the
generator is hard to access as they usually are. One or two touches of about 2
second each should be sufficant.

I've replaced my generator on the S1 Alpine and now I need to polarize the
fields. The paper I received with the generator states: "Before connecting
generator wires, polarize the generator by taking a suitable length of 14
gauge or similar wire from the HOT terminal of the battery and flashing it
several times against the field (smaller terminal) of the generator." Since
my
Alpine is a "positive" ground, is the HOT terminal that it's referring to,
the
NEGATIVE terminal on the battery? Can anybody explain the correct method to
me?
