As I understand Brent's problem, he has a series 2 crashbox that is O/D. It
has problems staying in gear, therefore he wants to replace it. He would
like to wave a magic wand and have the problem go away, (I try this myself,
most recently with my strombergs) but since this has failed to produce
results, and he must spend some cash and effort, he would like to upgrade to
a Fully Synchro trans, for better gear ratios, less whine, and shifting
without coming to a complete stop.
My suggestion, was that he find a complete fully synchromesh O/D trans with
bad O/D unit and swap his good O/D unit and this would make it all work.
This is often not possible because, though O/D units are readily available,
The TAILSHAFT from the transmission is rare. Finding a transmission with the
O/D unit trashed is as difficult as finding the whole setup in good
condition!
Here is the sticky part. I also suggested that Brent take his tailshaft out
of the bad trans, and install it in the fully-synchromesh transmission. This
has the benefit of providing a tailshaft with some meat since the later
series actually twist off under torque, I have seen it.
Dave Green is in fact correct, the shafts are different in the first gear
area. For some reson, Rootes made the parts of te transmission
non-interchangeable when they went to all synchro. That is why, At first
glance, this seems impossible.However, the shaft can be taken to a
machinist, and made to work. I have never done it myself, but in one of the
SAOC Horns, there is detailed instructions on how to do it, part of the
"Alec's Mini Restoration" series. He said, the cost of machine work was
around 40 Pounds, which likens to $75 here. He has driven the car around to
prove it. I made a copy of it for Jarrid Gross, and have since been unable
to locate my own. So, if you want to try this method, contact Jarrid, and
have him make you a copy of my copy, or find someone who has a set of SAOC
Horns that include issues from 1977 up to 1993, though I think it was issue
#81-#94.
But once again, this is one of those "modifacations" that are best left to
people who have some experience, or people who have a lot of time one their
hands! Considering the cost and effort, it might be best to just find what
you need already to go. Kind of like the time I spent $12, 3 hours, welding
rod, and some odd watts of electricity trying to weld up a thermostat
housing so I wouldn't have to buy one from Rick at SS for the outrageous
price of $17.00, though in the end, that is what I did. Lou
