I'm just going to fire this into the air having rebuilt a few
older Sunbeam Talbot engines. Did they (Rootes) continue the design on the
Series engines whereby the distributor is driven from a shaft that fits
into the top of the oil pump driven shaft? The oil pump is driven by a
spiral gear that is driven by the camshaft and the orientation of the
driving slot (i.e. the meshing of the gears) is critical when fitting the
oil pump to the block as this will have a direct bearing on the final
position of the distributor for the ignition firing at TDC for #1 cylinder.
If this alignment was off 180 degrees in assembly then the distributor can
only be mounted 180 degrees from where it should be. If no attention was
paid to the orientation of the oil pump shaft during assembly, then the
distributor will definitely not be oriented correctly.

For the record, on the Sunbeam Talbots, the correct position is
with the vacuum advance facing the back and almost parallel to the block.

Regards,
Bob
