The Cutlass/F-85 and Buick Skylark/Special used a normal driveshaft-it was the Pontiac Tempest that used a flexible driveshaft and a transaxle. The problem with the Olds and Buick automatics (called the "slim Jim") was that they used lock-up clutches that wore out in 25-30K miles and then produced horrible shifts (crash or slam was a better description). A good idea that is used on almost all modern automatics, but back then they still had some bugs to work out. I suspect this was more the "rubber"drive-shaft used on the slido-matics than the transmission itself. This is one of the very few of the many errors made by GM which has been admitted.
