I remember the "500", the tire had a problem with tread seperation also- had 
them on my Pinto (!).  One way or another Ford and Firestone will kill you!  I 
now drive a Toyota with Goodyear's on it.

Actually, the "721" tire was a pretty good one.  It replaced the dreaded 
recalled "500" that almost sunk Firestone back in the '70's.
