The mainshaft is longer as well so the rear extension housing is longer,
however, it is possible to use a late Series 5 input shaft in that box, but
the input gear tooth count has to be matched with a late Series 5
countershaft, if my memory holds correctly.
Another and probably better answer would be to find a machine shop that
would cut the longer "69" type input shafts to the former length and rebroach
them. I do not know what hardening processes were used, and if the shaft
would have to be heat treated afterwards. I could send you over 20 copies of
the longer transmissions today: too good to throw-away and not good enough to
keep. Incidently, there is a conversion kit to use this transmission in a
"proper" Sunbeam Talbot Alpine.
