Funny you mention that. I am removing an engine right now that had a slight
leak into the combustion chamber. The previous owner drove it that way for a
while because it still ran good, right up to the point she let it sit. Then
the water rusted the piston/cylinder to the point it won't spin!
A combustion chamber leak into the water jacket will over heat an
engine something fierce. For what it is worth, I would determine if the head
is cracked, and if it is, I would get it replaced most ricky tic.
Lastly, those plastic impellers on an aluminum water pump are notorious
for slipping and providing no water flow. Check to see that coolant is
actually flowing in the system since it is the easiest thing to check. Lou
