I've done that with mine also, mainly just to prove I could.  I think I decided 
2nd worked OK for the start.  I decided to make sure it was possible after my 
brother told me about having to drive his Porsche home from work like that 
because the clutch cable broke.  I wouldn't want to do that all the time though.
