finally dove in and found the blinker unit over on the passenger side 
against the fender under the dash.  i'm sure it was original <wink>; it was 
made in Japan.  (Rucas?)

went to a flaps, paid a couple bucks, and put it in.  ahhhhhhh,  blinkers 
like they should.
