Rick,
I wonder if you might have a hole in the fuel pump diaphragm instead of a
float problem. It seems like you got a lot of gas in the sump a lot more
quickly than you would normally get from a float problem. I doubt that you
would have any long term problems just from running the car with gasoline in
the sump for a short time. I sugggest that you check the fuel pump diaphragm
before you go back to the carbs.
