In Britspeak this is "judder".  I can't help but notice that the post  begins 
with "years ago".  This is often caused by misalignment in your  clutch.  
This is often caused by old age (not yours).  It may be time  for a new clutch. 
 
Resurface the flywheel when you replace the  clutch.  IMHO you are wasting 
your time chasing a ujoint.
