Michael---The advantage of the hydraulic clutch over the manually
actuated clutch is just what others have said... it eliminates the
linkage that one must use with the manual setup. (No slave cylinder,
cross shaft, fork pin, case bearings, and associated hardware.)
This hydraulic setup is also available to retrofit the stock TR tranny.
If your stock setup is working fine, then the hydraulic clutch
conversion might be considered when it is necessary to replace the above
parts when they are worn out.
The hydraulic setup when going to the Toyota 5 speed is an OPTION for
this conversion. If one wants to stay with the mechanical actuatiion, it
can be done, using some of theToyota parts.

I have been following the hydraulic clutch/5 speed conversion thread
with interest. As I do not have overdrive, the 5th gear sounds very
attractive. But the reason for this note is to question what is wrong
with the standard clutch.
On my '70 PI, I had a master cylinder problem that resolved with a
rebuild kit. On my '76, I had a "sticky clutch" problem that resolved
with the recommended machining (smoothing of the cover) from the Buckeye
website. Otherwise, both clutches have worked great.
What does a hydraulic clutch gain over stock if stock is working right?
Thanks.
