Alan, you can try turning the locking nut around so the flat part is
almost flush with the end of the ball joint stud, then whack the nut and
stud with a BFH. Better is to use the pickle fork, but only if you are
replacing the ball joint since the boot usually gets ripped in the
process. Best is a ball joint separator which looks like a 3 or 4 inch
gear puller. I think Autozone or Checker may rent the pickle fork
and/or the gear puller.

don't have.
i have removed the shock since I am putting polly bushings in.
The bottom of the ball joint has an inset so I tried hitting it with
set driver and a hammer, no luck.
Its hard to get a good shot at it. I was told to remove the spring and
the control arm; and I can see that that would give me a much better
shot at it; but I am trying to avoid that.
