Where's the clunk coming from? The front? The rear? The tranny??

And what you mean by "if I go real slow on the clutch I get by"? Does this
mean that when you let the clutch out slowly you get no clunk?

Are you sure that all your motor mounts, tranny mounts, exhaust hangers,
etc. are tight? We used to get all sorts of wierd "graunch" sounds when
the muffler hangars worked loose "back in the day". I'd usually think
"argh! the car is falling apart!!!" I learned a long time ago to just work
around the car a few times / month to make sure that all the fittings were
snugged down.
