Cary,

I pack the oil pump with lubriplate 105.  This creates a suction that pulls the 
oil into and primes the oil pump upon startup. It also lubricates the bearing 
sufaces as it passes through the oil system.  I learned this trick from a 
racing engine builder in the 70's.
