Hello all,
I had this similar problem around 60 mph. The old cowl shake syndrome. My
only problem was EVERYTHING was new in my front end including new wheels
(TR6 but thoroughly checked) but could not find the problem. Turned out it
was the hub that warped/bent. Pull the wheel (s) and run a straight edge
across the hub along the studs. If you have any rock this will be your
problem. A more accurate check is to put a run out gauge on the following
points on the hub. The edge where the grease cap goes on to seal the
bearings from dirt. Then on the edge of the hub. My original was out over
.070". My used replacement was out about .035". Machined them at work on the
lathe to within +/- .002". Guess what. For the first time in 4 years no
shake what-so-ever. None. Any deviation greater than .010" at this location
on the hub (IMHO), will grow proportionately at the edge of the tire. I have
shared this with several listers and solved long standings problem. Try it
out, you might be surprised. If you do have this problem, try the lathe
first, much cheaper. Just have a machine shop true them up.

72 TR6 (with no shimmy)
59 TR3A (as a matter of routine-done) Not on the road yet, but were out over
.025".
