 Kevin:

From Dictionary. COM: Of, relating to, or being a reversible
thermodynamic process that occurs without gain or loss of heat and
without a change in entropy.

Simply stated, adiabatic in this context means "without a change
in temperature". If the temperature remains constant, then a doubling of
pressure means a doubling of air density, and a doubling of power
produced when the fuel is mixed with the air and burned. However, the
air heats up as it is compressed, so the increase in density/power is
less than you expect.
I was pointing out that if you assume adiabatic compression,
then the horsepower produced by the engine is
((boost + atmospheric pressure)/atmospheric pressure) * base horsepower.
NOT, as was supposed, a fixed value of 10HP per pound of boost.
Since the supercharger does NOT produce adiabatic compression,
the horsepower will always be less than this formula states. This is why
intercoolers become so useful in super/turbo charged applications, to
reduce the temperature of the compressed air and bring the gain closer
to the adiabatic ideal.

        Cheers,

        Vance

P.S. Had to think about W.T.F. Sometimes I am soooo slow.

W.T.F. id "adibiatic", or however you spell it?
