i had a simial problem with gas leaking out a vent hole. although i have the
1976 carbs.
of course this happened to me while driving to work, at a stop light the
idle seemed high and rough and then the smell of GAS!
so after work, i went out and took off the carbs (and had great advice from
this list in my time of need) turned the carbs over to remove the float
bowl. tiny bits of rust that escape the fuel filter (believe me, i mean
TINY) can and will easily make the jet bind up just enough that not even
tapping w/ a screw driver will help.

i would spray the jet w/ carb cleaner, take the floats out of the pins,
clean with a clean rag and rise in gas. spray the heck out of the entire
under side of the float bowl. oh, i also generally take of the dampers. just
so i don't get oil everywhere and to protect the needle.
make sure this jet moves freely, the slightest touch from a finger should
show that it moves. of course this isn't enough to clean it out...use gas or
carb cleaner.

if you have rust in the fuel filter or had a ton in the past. check the fuel
pump.
mine had A LOT of super fine rust dust that would of course make it's way to
my carbs.

you don't have to do an entire fuel pump rebuild, but it is better to take
it off the car (not very easy to access the nuts) and ideally clean SUPER
well, and use new gaskets found in a rebuild kit.
but if the diaphram in the fuel pump is good enough, no real need to replace
(use your judgement)
the diaphram is a PAIN to get latched properly. hard to explain.

good luck. it can be fix quickly.
