Having just done a fair amount of work on my "Grape Ape" that required the
tunnel out I will definitely support the "It took a lot of patience to get it
to
fit. I may have said some bad words in the process." I had mine in and out
so often I was thinking of putting it in with Velcro.
I'm sure everyone has their favorite process but the previous owner had put
the tunnel in with some of the stickiest, nastiest gray goo as a seal I have
ever dealt with. I am quite sure it was water tight as I had to practically
beat it out to even get it loose. After cleaning most, there was NO WAY I was
going to get it all, of the goo off I returned the favor with some 3M sealant
after putting in an extra layer of the new foil backed jute. i.e. a layer on
the
inside of the car under the carpet and a layer on the inside of the tunnel
cover that I sealed with aluminum tape to help keep moisture at bay. Much
quieter now and if I ever do drive it into the lake maybe it will float long
enough
for me to jump out.
As to lining up the holes, the advice you received sounds good to me. Line
up one side, one hole at a time, drill it, bolt it and move on. Or you could
take the lazy way out and just get shelf tapping screws/bolts and shoot them
straight in. Not really recommended though, unless of course, you plan on
passing the car on immediately to some new owner. Like your son perhaps, who
after
seeing the wonderful work that was done by the previous owner, YOU, will
forever remember you when the "Saying some bad words in the process" method is
employed.
Cheers,
