Hi,
The "problem" of using a J type in 2nd gear as I understand it is related
to the fact that the J-type has no oil pressure accumulator and therefore
takes more time to build the pressure to engage the overdrive clutches
than it really should. I guess this would imperil (emperil?) the clutches
in the O/D unit. The reason that it takes time to build pressure is that
the pump gets its motivation from the output shaft of the tranny.
The A-type has an accumulator and therfore has residual pressure to engage
the clutches regardless of the speed of the output shaft.
Of course, I could be full of it. You never know.
Somehow, having been a "student of things Triumph" for a long time, I
think we can relate the demise of the A-type to cost reductions, but I'll
cede to anyone that knows better.
