I had the same conversion done to my transmission and figured if it has to
be taken apart I might as well have the whole thing rebuilt anyway.  Total
rebuild labor was 8 hours.  Removing and replacing the transmission is
probably about another 6-8 hours so your mechanic is giving it to you
straight.  I think the $90 per hour is a bit steep though, albeit not
knowing the common West Coast labor fee.  My TR specialist charges $60/hr in
NC.

I would just spend the $2175 and purchase one of Quantum Mechanics' complete
rebuilt O/D units and then try your hand at installing it yourself.  That
job, while time consuming and a literal pain in the neck, is a whole lot
more basic than rebuilding a transmission, a task definitely not for the
uninitiated.  And, of course, while you're at it, replace the clutch and
throwout bearing.  Figure about another $300-$400.  Sounds like a good
winter project, although you really do not have winters in San Diego, do
you? 8~D
