I always assumed it was because of the under square engine
design (stroke is longer than
the bore is wide). Maybe somebody else knows otherwise.
Over square engines (Bore is wider than the stroke is long) have
a completely different sound.
The duration of the cam makes a difference too, I would imagine.

Hello,
I have always wondered how the TR6 has such a unique
exhaust note. I have owned a ford truck with a
straight 6, same firing order and everything and it
sounded like a farm tractor. I have heard other TR's
with pieced together exhausts (i.e. non-stock, off the
shelf mufflers) and it still has that awesome sound.
Is it the dual exhaust going all the way back or what?
