Jim,
how much play is acceptable? I'm surprised how much I can rotate the drive 
shaft before the axel moves.  I would guess I have as much as 10 degrees of 
rotation before the axels move  I've replaced everything in my driveline accept 
the rear end.  I'm convinced that the occasional clunk or "ping" I hear/feel 
when accelerating is in the rear end.  But, thus far it is smooth, silent and 
without leaks.
