Gene---Does e pitch of the sound change with road speed, or engine
speed?

If engine speed, take a good look at the alternator as a source. Add a
big load to the electrical system to see if it changes pitch or volume.
If you then suspect this, temporarily slacken or disconnect the "fan"
belt to take the alternator out of the picture.

Use of a stethoscope can sometimes help in finding sounds that "travel".

It could still be the t/o bearing.

If road speed related, suspect any of the six u-joints.

From: motrv8d@hotmail.com(Gene Holtzclaw) Yesterday while driving, I
noticed a noise I've not experienced before. It is a intermittant
whiring noise. Sort of how a bearing in a fan sounds right before it
seizes. Would this be a input shaft bearing on the transmission? It does
it with the clutch depressed or released, does not remind me at all of
the dreaded throw out bearing failure. Seems a little more frequent with
engine speed.
