Joe---You should use a gear puller to remove the crank sprocket. Get it
behind the timing chain, to protect the some-what soft teeth. If the
crankshaft key tries to come part way out with the sprocket, tap it back
in with a soft tool. (The curve of the key won't permit them to come out
together) 
Keep the crank stub well oiled and burr free in the process.

How do I remove the crank gear from the crankshaft? It would seem
obvious that it just slides off, but it's stuck. Will it slide over the
key with a gear puller?
