        Joe:

Did you try swapping the drums between the two sides. That will
narrow it down a bit and tell you if the drum itself is the problem, or
the hub.
Also, did you rebuild the hub? I was not sure what you meant
when you said you had not done anything to it.
If you did rebuild it, the flange may be bent. This would not
necessarily keep the flange from seating against the trailing arm, but
could result in the center of the hub not being coaxial with the hub's
trailing arm mount.
Another possibility is that the internal bearing races are not
concentric, which might be the case if you replaced the bearings. The
races might not be fully seated inside the hub. The tip of the stub axle
may have been bent during disassembly, or perhaps if the hub was dropped
or abused.

Just some random thoughts. Keep us posted.

        Vance

Subject: brake drum problem

I've run into another problem with my suspension rebuild. One of the
brake
drums won't seat on the rear hub. It has a wobble somewhere. The
problem is
not in the drum itself, as the drum works fine on the contralateral
side. I
can only get one of the set screws in at a time, as the drum just won't
sit
flat. I have wire wheels, and I installed the adapter to see if the
drum would
sit square. I don't see any obvious run out, but something is amiss. On
the OK
side, the center of the hub protrudes just slightly through the hole in
the
brake drum. On the bad side, the the hub does not even come up flush to
the
flat surface of the brake drum. It seems that there is something wrong
with the
hub or brake plate. I've not done anything to the hub. I did have some
trouble
getting the brake back plate over the studs of the trailing arm, It was
also
a bit of work to get the hub over the studs. When I helicoiled in new
studs,
one was less than straight. I wacked it with a hammer to straighten it
out.
Everything seemed to go together Ok afterwards. The hub/brake back plate
seem
to be sitting flat against the trailing arm. Any ideas where to look?
When I
took the drums off, there were no set-screws. But the drum definitely
needs
to seat square. Also, I was surprised at how little 16 lbs of torque
feels
like when attaching the hub to the trailing arm. It took almost that
much to
get past the nyloc part of the nut.
