List----I don't know what the sound deadening consists of on most of
the timing covers. My Ca. car didn't have this, tho I didn't know, or
care, why. (Kai may have hit upon it) I would have no problems with
such small quanties anyway, even if it is asbestos. I believe this falls
into the same classification as lead-based paints that we all used for a
hundred years. (I just don't eat it off the intended surfaces)
Illustrations of this in some of the parts suppliers catalogues show the
surface to have "something" on it.

I believe the glop is an asbestos sound-deadening material used to quiet
the chain noise from the front of the engine.
If it is indeed asbestos one should take appropriate care in handling
and disposing.

That is a good point! I never thought of that, but it explains why a
prominent California TR6 owner on this list has claimed in the past to
have not seen the sound deadening material on timing chain covers of
Cali TR6s. The reason being I believe California was one of the first
states to recognize the hazards of asbestos and regulate and remove it
from use in products.
That said, the stuff does not break into small fibers when you try and
remove it. It comes off in chunks of hard material, like hardened bondo
or plaster would.
But yes, if you have the sound dampening material on your cover it is
original. If it is not there, it could be original also or have been
removed by someone.
