That is a good point!  I never thought of that, but it explains why a
prominent California TR6 owner on this list has claimed in the past to have
not seen the sound deadening material on timing chain covers of Cali TR6s.
The reason being I believe California was one of the first states to
recognize the hazards of asbestos and regulate and remove it from use in
products.

That said, the stuff does not break into small fibers when you try and
remove it.  It comes off in chunks of hard material, like hardened bondo or
plaster would.

But yes, if you have the sound dampening material on your cover it is
original.  If it is not there, it could be original also or have been
removed by someone.
