Hi All,

Well I got to drive my TR-6 around town a bit yesterday, and I'll admit
I got a little heavy on the clutch as I was discovering its
capabilities. Hey, it's a sports car! :o) I think I uncovered a
hidden problem, the dreaded rear end clunk. It didn't do it during the
test drive, and when it finally emerged, it seems worse when releasing
the clutch to back up. In fact, it makes the sound every-time in
reverse, and sometimes when shifting while moving forward.

I have it on jack stands right now, and the first thing I looked at was
the diff mount weld on the passenger's side. The weld had been
repaired, while poorly done, it is a solid weld. Next I looked to
lateral movement in the rear tires, no play there. But when I moved the
right wheel forward and back, there is about 1/2" of play. That seems
excessive to me, and if I jolt the wheel, I can see how that would
create a clunk.

So, my question is, where do I go from here? I've read that rebuilding
a diff is expensive and not to be attempted by the backyard mechanic.
Any guidance would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Mike
