Regarding the various suggestions...I have a 76 with OD (J-type). My glove
box manual also states to use 90wt gear oil. I have done this (GL4) and the
OD works flawlessly in any temp I have driven. I live in Canada so we get
some cool temps here, although I don't drive in winter.
A point perhaps worth mentioning:
The ODs in Triumphs were used in other makes as well. MG, A-H and Volvo come
to mind. J-types were certainly used in Volvos of similar vintage to the TR6
(and later). I believe some Volvo manuals recommend automatic transmission
fluid for the J-type OD gear boxes. Since the OD unit shares its oil with
the gearbox, I suspect the Laycock recommendation might be a catch all one,
with each car maker doing their own tests to see what oil works best with
the OD and *their* gearbox. I assume since the OD was an expensive option,
they would test somewhat comprehensively before recommending a specific oil
for their cars. To avoid $$$ warranty work.
Something to consider.
