Don:
You may have an old metric thread, that is off current standard. During a
couple of decades of conversion to metric here in Canada, we learned to keep
our used nuts and bolts, and to keep the Fiat ones separate from the VW
ones, and the Japanese ones, etc.
Here is a link to a table the MANY standard pitches used on various metric
threads. One might get the idea that the metric standard is not so
standard.
