Todd,
you can separate the head, however, it is likely to be rusted.  The best way to 
do this is hang the engine by the eye hooks on the head, use a beam or an 
engine lift and take a 2x4 and wack the block.  Use lots of wd4o.  Eventually 
they will separate.
