Mark and Brian---One easy test to see if the rear brakes need adjusting
is to pull up on the hand brake. From the rest position, about 6 or 7
"clicks" should lock the rear wheels. 10 clicks or more could mean that
the brake pedal has to be depressed too far down before the hydraulic
pressures to equalize.

Ian,
One possibility for the long pedal travel, could it be that the
adjusters need to be snugged up after the drums were turned? Usually if
the booster is not operating, the brakes work, but with more pedal
effort.
There may be other reasons for the increase in travel, but the adjusters
were the first to come to my mind.
Good luck,
